Winter At White Mountain Lodge

Kalvträsk, Skellefteå

Kalvträsk village has a population of barely forty. There are a general store and a small museum, Kalfträsks Historiska. Here the sense of being close to the wilderness is palpable, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that Kalvträsk is on the edge of Vitbergen, the region’s largest nature reserve. Here, the forest has been left largely untouched by human hand and, although deep and dense, it is easily accessible. White Mountain lodge is managed by the family Björn and Linnea Bergström. Their love and passion for both the place and their guests is best summarized in “Nature makes you better”.

Period: December-April

Day 1:

Arrival Skellefteå airport. Skellefteå is the southern entry into Swedish Lapland. Half the population inhabits the countryside – next door to wild rivers, hundreds of lakes, dense forests and miles and miles of coastline. The other half dwell in a modern city; a seamless transition from urban to rural defining the good life in the Arctic. The city offers most of the things you would expect                      in terms of good community services, good transport links and a thriving restaurant         and cultural scene.

Approx. 17.00: Arrival at White Mountain Lodge, Kalvträsk. The location of the camp is characterized by silence and virgin nature, beautifully situated at the shore of a lake besides a quite unknown, unexplored and vast nature reserve. Your host and guide for the days in the wild, Björn, meets you on arrival. After checking in the cabins, the guests meet up with Björn for a wood chopping school. We learn you how to chop wood and make a fire in a safe way, for heating your cabin and your sauna bath.

18.00: A traditional dinner with local influences at the main lodge

19.30: Time for information about the camp and preparations for the next day's program, checking map’s and equipment. We end the day with storytelling about the village and the world’s oldest ski that was found here, a hot beverage around the fireplace makes the day complete.

Day 2, am: Historical village tour with cheese tasting

08.00: Local breakfast buffé at the main lodge

10.00: We start the day on the best way possible, with a healthy walking session from the camp up to the centre of the village (approx. 1.5 km, 30 min) Here we visit the Kalfträsk Museum of History where we learn more about the village and of course the Kalvträsk ski (world’s oldest wooden ski)

The tour then continues to the close-by Kalvträsk local micro cheese dairy where the cheesemaker Tony Bäckström tells us about his life from childhood to a former Swedish champion in cheese making and his journey until now and why the Kalvträsk cheese is unique! Of course, we also get a cheese tasting session.

12.00: Outdoor cooking school with a traditional local outdoor lunch over open fire! The guest helps with making a bonfire and preparing the food.

Off-track snow-flow skiing with historical skis

13.00: Time journey on replicas of the oldest ski in the world. Thanks to our visit at the museum our guests now knows the history about the Kalvträsk ski. First, we check our equipment, dress for outdoors and pack our backpacks then we start with some simpler technique training with the skis on flat land. When our guests are comfortable with the skis, we start our tour out into the wild nature. After a while we stop for a Swedish coffee making course in the forest. The guest can now use their new born skills from wood chopping school to help starting the fire. When the fire is going our guide teaches the guests how to make Swedish coffee! During the tour we take the opportunity to enjoy the silence which we will find in the deep forests around Kalvträsk and with a bit of luck we might see a moose or maybe a golden eagle!

17.30: We gather at the sauna where the guests help making a fire to heat up the sauna so it´s warm and cosy right after dinner
