Torfrid Olsson art museum

BYGDETRÄSK, Skellefteå

In the village of Bygdeträsk, right by Europe’s longest birch parkway, you will find ‘Northern Sweden’s finest art museum’. The museum exhibits Torfrid Olsson’s (1913-2003) artistry with idiosyncratic and original works in diverse techniques and materials, along with history, studio and much more related to Torfrid’s extensive artistic career.

The artist is represented at, among others, Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum, and the Västerås and Gothenburg museums of art, and his works are shown through a number of public exhibitions. In 2013, a book on the life of Torfrid Olsson was released, titled ‘Till fruktbarhetens lov’ (Eng: On the Law of Fertility).

The museum accepts bookings for large groups as well as spontaneous individual visits, and it is just as appealing to the art conscious as it is to curious passers-by. Each year a piece of work of by one of Torfrid Olsson’s artistic contemporaries is exhibited. In 2019 and 2020, some of the history and select works of the renowned designer and potter Stig Lindberg, who hails from Bygdeträsk, were shown.

After taking in all the art, you are welcome to sit down at our café and enjoy some homemade pastries, ice cream and our beloved ‘museum chocolate’.
