Yoik and stories with Simon Marainen

Trappscenen, Skellefteå

Simon Issát Marainen is a yoiker, poet and reindeer owner from Nedre Soppero and he has culture in his genes.

He started writing poems in his teens and now Simon Issát is an established yoiker and musician. He has received a cultural scholarship, been nominated for the Swedish Radio Short Story Prize, has been on stage as Lars Levi Laestadius and is also heard as a vocalist in the Swedish-Norwegian band Ára. "A Sami cultural worker must be broad in his register if he is to be able to support himself."

Now we look forward to finally listening to his enchanting stories and yoik. He has been described as a "low-key culture bearer with a voice that makes the audience's skin tingle and want to rise from the benches".

About his yoke, Simon has said:
"It feels angular and uncomfortable to write in Swedish. It feels uncomfortable for the tongue, yes for the whole mouth to speak Swedish. Almost like when the dentist examines one's teeth and looks for holes, sometimes it hurtsthe. What then relieves the best is to lubricate my tongue, my thoughts, my mouth and my whole soul with my mother tongue Sami. And if the yoke was a language, it would also be my mother tongue. "
