Knitting action - Skellefteå is knitting for peace!

Kulturtrappan, Sara kulturhus, Skellefteå

Before the performance Knitting Peace visits Skellefteå this autumn, we are calling for a knitting action!

The pen is mightier than the sword is a famous saying, but maybe a pair of knitting needles can be just as powerful? Around the world, people are getting involved to create a better world using craft as a method. It can be about peace, non-violence, equality, inclusion or anti-consumerism. This peaceful way of protesting and expressing one's opinions through crafts is a grassroots movement named craftivism.

During its journey around the world, Knitting Peace has engaged and met peace knitters who shared their works and thoughts about knitting peace. The amount of knitting that has come in has been overwhelming and it is clear that the combination of circus, striving and knitting has grown into a movement that spans several continents. Through the performance and exhibition, craftivism from New York, Rosario and Girona is interwoven with places such as Alby, Säffle and now Skellefteå.

Do you also want to be part of the Knitting Peace peace demonstration? Then knit something in white and feel free to think about the questions below.

• Why do you knit?

• What are you striving for?

• Is it possible to make peace?

Your contribution may be shown in connection with Cirkus Cirkör's performances on October 10-11 and in their touring foyer exhibition.

We hope that the knitting appeal inspires to believe in and commit to a better world together with others. Or maybe you simply feel like knitting? You participate based on your conditions.

Knit with us - or where it suits you: If you want - come and knit with us in the house. If you don't have the opportunity to meet, it is of course just as well to knit at home - or wherever suits you.

Feel free to bring your own knitting in white (which is the color of peace). It can preferably be rough and recycled. If you can't knit or crochet, we'll help you. Certain materials (knitting needles and yarn) are available on site which we borrow/donate.

For those of you who need help getting started, you find good instructions here.

All knitted creations that are submitted to us will be part of an upcoming Knitting-for-Peace exhibition in Sara kulturhus.
