The 39 steps

Stage 2, Sara kulturhus, Skellefteå

In a foggy London, the life-weary Richard Hannay tries to cheer himself up and goes to the theater. But in the middle of the performance, several shots are heard and panic arises. In the tumult, the mysterious Annabella appears and asks for help. Richard does not believe in her story of spies and international agents at first, but before he knows it, he is suspected of a murder he did not commit and involved in a fight to save the world from a devastating war.

The 39 Steps is a thrilling thriller where the audience is offered a film noir feeling, train chases, spies, femme fatales, insidious villains with severed fingers - and a lot of laughter. The era is 1930s, which is reflected in the costume and in the many environments in Scotland and England. The four actors share over 150 roles and the changes take place at a breakneck pace.

The play is based on one of Alfred Hitchcock's early film masterpieces The 39 Steps, which in turn is based on the novel withthe same name by John Buchan from 1915. The stage version is a thriller comedy that has been a great success worldwide and has been awarded several prizes. It premiered in the UK in 1995 and has been played on Broadway and in London's West End. In the autumn of 2013, it had its Swedish premiere and Aftonbladet then gave the show 4 plus and wrote, among other things:

"The 39 steps is a pleasurable declaration of love for the theater as play."

"Wonderfully entertaining!"

"Fantastically worth seeing"
