Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström for Riksbyggen

North terrace, Sara kulturhus, Skellefteå

The mobile sauna Solar Egg will once again return to the northern parts of Sweden. Now in Skellefteå, around 290 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. Symbolising new beginnings, Solar Egg has already shared its warmth in several stunning locations all over the world: Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Minneapolis, as well as where it all started, in Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi, in northern Sweden. The next stop on the journey is Sara kulturhus’s northern terrace.

Welcome to sample the Solar Egg or just look at the work during Sara Kulturhus' opening hours.

Booking will open in February.

–We are excited about Solar Egg visiting Skellefteå Konsthall (Skellefteå Art Gallery) in Sara kulturhus. The sauna was created in 2017 as a catalyst to promote local dialogue about the relocation of the city of Kiruna, forced by decades of mining. With Solar Egg we will spark sweaty conversations about the green transformation in our society, says Johanna Frelin, CEO of the cooperative housing developer Riksbyggen.

In the city centre of Skellefteå, Sara kulturhus rises above all other buildings. One of the tallest wooden constructions in the world. The award-winning building and culture centre opened in September 2021 and accommodates Skellefteå Konsthall and a hotel, Wood hotel by Elite. Since then, in the region of Skellefteå, both Sara kulturhus and Skellefteå earned a lot of attention for their work with sustainable and social transformation. In July 2022, Skellefteå was named one of the world’s greatest places by Time Magazine.

– With the exhibition “The broken greenhouse” and Solar Egg, Skellefteå Konsthall once again contributes to arousing interest both in contemporary art and climate and sustainability issues, something that is completely in line with the sustainability work by Skellefteå. I'm looking forward to taking part in the exhibition as well as the conversations that will be sparked between people in the Solar Egg, says Evelina Fahlesson, municipal counsellor and vice-chairman of the municipal board, Skellefteå municipality.

Visitors will be able to book their full sauna experience for free and experience the wood burners at a comfortable 80° C. The booking will open in February.
– Solar Egg is one of our most successful collaborations ever. We get requests frequently from institutions around Europe to tour the sauna. The unique location at Sara kulturhus is the perfect fit for the cause of Solar Egg, says Mathias Sandberg, marketing and sales director at Riksbyggen.

About the Solar Egg
The sauna, Solar Egg, by Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström, commissioned by Riksbyggen, was designed to promote local dialogue and contemplation about the relocation of the city of Kiruna, located north of the Arctic Circle. Assembling the 69 golden plates that create the exterior of the sauna requires 1512 bolts and takes 4 to 5 days.

Riksbyggen is a cooperative company that develops new housing in Sweden. Read more: riksbyggen.se/solaregg
