TOMAS ANDERSSON - When our lord made Bygdsiljum & all the rest
Burträsk, Skellefteå
I believe in evolution. In my worldview, the world did not come into existence as described in the Book of Genesis. I consider the creation story to be a beautiful, powerful, and poetic narrative—as long as one has the freedom to believe in it as one wish. And thankfully, we have freedom of religion in our country. It is possible to believe in evolution and still be open to spirituality at the same time. This is not something that everyone in the world is free to do.
I see the Jewish/Christian creation story as a tale of how everything began. And that’s not unusual. Such stories have arisen in most human cultures. Just looking up at a starry sky on a clear winter night can raise big questions. And the answers to those questions have indeed varied depending on time and place. According to the creation story, humans are a construct of the Lord, a kind of invention.
But it was probably like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse when humans were given the task of stewarding creation.
Since we are now well on our way to eradicating all other creatures and destroying the entire planet, one has to ask whether there was a flaw in the design? This question is explored in the performance.
