Inauguration of Gïelevåhkoe/ Giällavahkkuo/ Giellavahkko/ Giellavahkku/ Sami language week

The Sami language center together with Skellefteå municipality and the Skellefteå Sami association are organizing the inauguration of the Sami language week 2024 at Sara Kulturhus in Syöldate/Skellefteå on 18 October 2024.

What is Sami language week?

The purpose of the Sami language week is to raise the status of the Sami languages, and increase knowledge of the Sami language and culture throughout society. The Sami languages are both indigenous languages and national minority languages in Sweden, but are very little seen in the majority society, they are also threatened with disappearing. The visibility of language in everyday life is of great importance for language users' sense of belonging and recognition, as language is connected with identity and cultural heritage.
