The Dairymaid from Burträsk

Ulrika Eleonora Lindström was the creator of Västerbotten cheese and the dairymaid whose story Sandra Marklund, educator at Skellefteå Museum, explores in this lecture.

During the 19th century, dairy work was one of only three educational opportunities available to women. Through historical documents, we follow Ulrika Eleonora’s life from childhood to old age in a society undergoing rapid modernisation. Through hard work and with the support of the agricultural society, almost an entire village, and another successful yet largely forgotten woman, she achieved lasting recognition.
