We are Mammals

About being a little on the sidelines, a bit off, a little skewed. About uncharming everyday situations with spaghetti under your socks and fish fingers for lunchboxes, about juggling everything happening at once - small children/teenagers, career and wanting a well-functioning adult life. About relationships that creak and get messy. About being in the midst of life, between young and old, noticing how one ages while seeing one's parents grow old, sick, and die.
About being contrary. About everything behind the polished surface, about wanting to stretch the efficient norm society. About the raw and unpolished and the mystique of everyday life – spaces that suddenly open up, abysses that become visible. About being sensitive, alive, fragile, and afraid. About being human in our time.
Annika Norlin's musical universe meets Ada Berger's sharp contemporary analyses in this raw and unpolished performance about being human in our time. We live in a time where the view of humanity is very mechanical. She is supposed to be smooth, well-functioning and useful, easy to understand and easy to fix if she breaks. In this performance, we get to experience something beyond utility and function. There is room for the complex, mysterious, incomprehensible, unconscious, and enigmatic that we have pushed aside and chased away. Everything should fit here – even the imperfect, that which is broken, clipped, and fragile.

The meeting between Ada and Annika, two current, writing individuals, is a new and unique collaboration that sets the stage for an exciting performing arts experience as Ada Berger, with her sense of humor, existential questions, and sharp contemporary analyses, takes on writing the script based on Annika Norlin's musical universe. Annika's music and lyrics have never before been dramatized for the theater stage, and in We Are Mammals the audience finally gets to encounter her sincere, comedic, and revealing texts in a performed form.
Ann-Sofie Lundin/ANSO is responsible for sound design and music arrangements, and the performance is directed by Johanna Salander, the artistic leader of Västerbotten Theatre.
The performance is a co-production between Västerbotten Theatre and Riksteatern.
