When the workers took a stand – Klemensnäs 1932

Lecture

Nordanå Teatern

18 Oct 13:30 - 14:30

18 Oct

What really happened in Klemensnäs when workers threw stones, the authorities opened fire, and the women were considered the worst participants in the demonstration?

The summer of 1932 was marked by a major labour dispute which escalated in Klemensnäs, just outside Skellefteå, on 5 July. What led up to the events? Which factors contributed to what happened? Who was involved?

Drawing on source material from the trial following the so-called Klemensnäs riots, Maja Östlund, museum host at Skellefteå Museum, has put together a lecture on the course of events based on her master’s thesis. The story is placed in its historical context, questions are clarified, and witness testimonies are highlighted to provide a picture of Sweden in the 1930s.

Welcome to hear a fascinating story that, in many ways, still resonates with issues in society today.

The lecture is free of charge, but registration is required. Please note that the lecture will be held in Swedish.

The lecture is part of the Storytelling Festival 2026 and will also be held in Klemensnäs on Wednesday, 14 October, 6–7 pm.
