Open chamber in Bonnstan

Skellefteå

Welcome to Bonnstan, one of the 16 preserved church towns in Sweden. It is a living cultural heritage, a unique cultural environment of national interest, and one of Skellefteå's largest and most interesting attractions.

The church town, locally known as Bonnstan, has its origins from the 17th century. It was built by the parish farmers and used for overnight stays during church visits and other errands. During weekends, Bonnstan became a bustling urban environment with all that it entailed, serving as a natural gathering place for the parishioners long before Skellefteå city was established. Bonnstan consists of 114 houses and 373 chambers, which are still privately owned. Some have been passed down through generations within families.

In the summer of 2024, between June 17th and August 30th, chamber owners in Bonnstan open their unique chambers to visitors. Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 15:00, the host of the day welcomes visitors, shows their chamber, and talks about the church town life past and present. Signs are available to help you find the chamber that is open for the day. Take a stroll through a living cultural heritage and discover a new experience around every corner!
