Visit the site of discovery of the Kalvträsk ski.
The Kalvträsk ski, which is 204 centimeters long and 15.5 centimeters wide, was found during a ditch excavation in 1924 in a marshy area between the villages of Fäbotjälen and Nybrännet, two kilometers east of Kalvträsk. When it was found, the other ski was also intact, however, it was damaged in connection with being moved from the place of discovery. A staff was also found at the scene. The find was submitted to the Umeå museum in 1925 by forester Aug Högdahl. In the 1980s, the ski was dated to 3,200 years BC. using the carbon-14 method. With its 5,200 years, it is thus one of the world's oldest preserved skis.
More about the ski can be read and viewed at the Kalfträsk Historical Museum. The original can be viewed at the Västerbotten museum, Umeå
Kalvträskskidan's discovery site is marked with a monument and can be visited all year round.
