The Flag Project - Skellefteå, 2025

Skellefteå

Title: The Flag Project - Skellefteå, 2025
Technique: Abstract fabric flags
Location: Trädgårdsgatan
Art consultant: Anna Karin Larsson

An art project about abstraction in collaboration with Norrhammarskolan, Edelvik folk high school and Kulturskolan in Skellefteå.

We are constantly surrounded by symbols, whether we are aware of them or not. Symbols can have completely different purposes and some of them can be informative, explanatory and others can function as advertising for a certain product, service or item. All of these symbols help us to construct and orient ourselves in a complicated world. The Flag Project by Jacob Dahlgren has consisted of a number of workshops where the artist lectured on what abstraction can be by showing images from his project Signs of abstraction and then, together with a group, transformed these experiences into sketches that then become finished flags in abstract patterns. The Flag project shows that everyone, regardless of background and prior knowledge, has the ability to create art in an inclusive and creative context. Art can be a source of inspiration for creative thinking and can unite people in collective action towards a common goal.

JACOB DAHLGREN

Jacob Dahlgren has over the past decades persistently worked and lived with the infinite possibilities of abstraction, where his precise sense of materiality is central. His production is versatile, extensive, playful, and ranges from material painting, sculpture and installation to video works and performative social manifestations. Recurring in his work is the fascination with stripes, repetitions and the use of everyday objects as starting points in often large-scale abstract works that are often rich in art historical references.

Jacob Dahlgren (b. 1970) lives and works in Stockholm. He studied between 1994-99 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and received his MFA in 1999.
