In this work I explore the constant change of my hometown and its relationship to people's movement and migration. Västerbotten is a region that has been marked by waves of depopulation throughout history. Young people leave their hometowns to seek educational opportunities, work opportunities, norm-breaking environments or to discover the world. Some of these return as returnees; they come back for holidays, nature or to start a family. The social transformation in recent years with investments in large green industries that have partly created population growth and partly a housing shortage has changed the image of northern Västerbotten as a depopulation area. However, when these industrial investments are hit by crises, the population is at risk to decrease again. It is a cyclical movement of arrival and departure.
The work is about a sense of home and escape, about the longing to build a nest and the courage to tear down and start over. The flock of birds symbolizes movement and change and together with the impressions that the viewers leave behind, the people who shape the city's identity through their presence, their impressions and the opportunities they are given are depicted. The work thus becomes a living part of the city's story and a reflection of its dynamic population flow.
ALEXANDRA BOMAN
Alexandra Boman is a textile artist with roots in Ursviken, who now lives in Skelleftehamn. She has education in design activism, textile contexts and crafts from Umeå University and the University of Borås, as well as the art department at Edelviks Folk High School in Burträsk.
In her creative process, Alexandra often explores themes that concern the power struggles between humans and nature, and how these interactions leave their mark on both land and people. In recent years, she has focused on the industrial development in Norrland in relation to the forms of nature and the fragility of society.
Alexandra enjoys working experimentally with techniques such as plant dyeing and recycling. She primarily uses appliqué, hand sewing and embroidery. Awareness of the unique properties and connotations of textiles is central to her creations.
