Sankt Olovs Church

Skellefteå

Right in the heart of Skellefteå, you’ll find Sankt Olovs Church.
Sankt Olovs Church in Skellefteå was built in the 1920s Classicist style between 1925 and 1927. The church was designed by architects Knut Nordenskjöld and Gustav Adolf Falk from Stockholm. The builder was J. A. Johansson from Bureå.

The church partly follows the traditional layout with the entrance in the west, a nave, and a chancel to the east. The tower’s placement on the southwest side and the sacristy’s angled position between the northeast transept and the chancel reflect architect Knut Nordenskjöld’s free interpretation of the Baroque style.

The Baroque elements are especially noticeable in the curved gables of the transepts, the sculptural work on the west portal, the pointed-arch windows, the curved buttress finishes, and the design of the tower’s top. National Romantic influences appear mainly in the choice of materials, with a base of dressed stone and black granite sculptural details.
