SUB ASTRA – a farewell ritual to the old Kiruna, the mining town that is slowly being demolished
Skellefteå
The night, the starry sky - the North Star, the low, sparse dwarf birch-dominated vegetation, words and moods that we have gathered around. The mysterious, solitary, the magical, sparkling. The journey of the Northern Lights across the sky and the question of whether it makes a sound or not.
"Through video, voice, sound and movement, we reflect on our hometown of Kiruna, which is slowly disappearing into the thundering darkness."
During the summer of 2023, the group traveled to Kiruna to make sound recordings in the old and new town, and in Abisko. Using different microphones, the artists have collected the blasting sound from the Kiruna mine's nightly mine explosions and sounds from different areas that meant a lot to them during their upbringing.
Houses and structures will be demolished, all that remains will be an enclosed nature. They try to understand the consequences of these changes, places that cease to exist except in their bodily memories.
