Trappscenen, Sara kulturhus, Skellefteå

Friday, August 29 at 7:00 PM, an artist talk with artist Carola Grahn will take place on the staircase stage, Sara Kulturhus. The invited moderator is the curator and doctoral student Anna Westman Kuhmunen.

In connection with the Wallstreet Festival in Skellefteå, artist Carola Grahn received an artistic design assignment. A work that will be completed in 2026 after Trädgårdsgatan, Sara Kulturhus.

Carola Grahn (b. 1982) is a Southern Sami artist, born in Jåhkåmåhkke (Jokkmokk) and active in Malmö. Central to her artistry is a critical exploration of man's alienation from nature and the destructive legacy of colonialism. A legacy that continues to cause suffering for natural and human societies.

By combining dark humor with warm invocations of community, Grahn incorporates references to Western popular culture and art history as a contrast to the Sami worldview and the holistic understanding of nature that forms the enduring focus of her art.

She received her master's degree from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm in 2013 and has also studied at Beckmans Design University and Gamleby Photography School.

Anna Westman Kuhmunen is curator of cultural history at Ájtte Museum and a doctoral student at Stockholm University, Department of Ethnology, History of Religion, Gender in the subject of History of Religion. Gender perspectives together with an interest in ritual studies and material culture are the theoretical approaches to the study of the historical source material. In addition to her thesis work, she teaches Sami religion at all levels of intuition. She is also a regularly invited lecturer and teacher at Sámi allaskuvla. Her research interests are Sami religion, gender, material culture and ritual studies.
