The Place Names in Bureå, a Lecture with Ulf Lundström

In this dissertation, interpretations are given of parish names, village names, and names of village districts, farms, shielings, and fishing sites in Bureå, Burträsk, and Lövånger in the southern part of Skellefteå Municipality. Here, people have spoken not only Nordic dialects but also both Finnish and Sámi, and this has left its mark on the wealth of place names.

The interpretations of the names are based on older written forms of place names from historical sources and on pronunciations preserved in dialect archives. However, many of the place name interpretations also rest on information the author has received from his many informants in the Skellefteå region.
