Handicraft Day was established to highlight and celebrate the Swedish craft tradition, as well as to raise awareness of the value of craftsmanship and sustainability. The background to the day has its roots in the 20th century, when it played an important role in preserving and developing local craft techniques. around Sweden. One aim has been to inspire new generations to discover the joy of creating their own crafts and learn traditional techniques such as weaving, knitting and woodcarving.

The celebration is often celebrated through workshops, exhibitions and open craft cafes where both beginners and experienced crafters can gather and exchange knowledge. Handicraft Day has thus become a valued meeting place for everyone who wants to preserve the Swedish cultural heritage in crafts and handicrafts.

The main organizer of Handicraft Day throughout Sweden is the National Federation of Swedish Handicraft Associations.
