The year is 1950 in an Estonia occupied by the Soviet Union and Stalin's terror machine is doing what it can to eradicate Estonian cultural heritage. 6-year-old Leelo's mother Helmes, who is the principal of a village school, is arrested because the security service found an Estonian flag among her belongings. The flag is a forbidden patriotic symbol and before Helmes is taken away to a prison camp, she manages to say to her daughter: "If you are a good girl, I will be back soon".
