The Kalvträsk area offers excellent opportunities for hiking in a beautiful and hilly forest environment, with a total of 50 km of trails. The trails start at Kvarndammen in Kalvträsk. In 2014, the trails were upgraded with clearing, boardwalks, new signage, and improved markings. New map systems and overview maps were also created. The trail network consists of various routes around the Kalvträsk area.
The longest route is a loop of approximately 30 km, passing over ridges, streams, and brooks, through forests and marshes, aiming for Avaberg, where you’ll find a stunning view of the Holmträsket and Vitträsket lakes. Here, you can take a short detour to visit the famed bear cave (at your own risk) near Vitträsket.
In Avaberg, you’ll find boathouses, a wind shelter, and a fire pit. The trail then continues along the Flottarleden, following Holmträsket Lake to the Holmsund passage, then continues along Lake Stenselet to Sagoön, located at the foot of Vitberget. A visit to the mountain’s summit is highly recommended. At 500 meters above sea level, climbing the restored old fire tower adds another 20 meters and takes you above the treetops. The view is breathtaking—especially at sunrise.
The trail then follows Lake Stenträsket via the Flottarleden to Svartådammen, where you’ll find a wind shelter and fire pit. It continues along the Svartån River to Svartåforsen, where it again turns into forest and marshland before emerging at Kvarnån and the cabin village by Kvarndammen. If you’re observant, you may encounter various wildlife along the trail. Hares, moose, and various bird species are common, but with some luck, you might spot a golden eagle, bear, fox, or lynx.
The main trail is designed so you can walk shorter loops if preferred—ranging from 2 km to 10 km. There’s also a shorter, wheelchair-accessible section along Lake Kalvträsket.
Trail conditions may vary due to ongoing forestry and fast-growing young forests. The trails are maintained on a voluntary basis, and feedback on trail quality is appreciated so that we can address any issues.
