Captivating musical landscapes unfold as Norrlandsoperan's symphony orchestra performs works by two contemporary Swedish greats, Anders Hillborg and Anna-Lena Laurin. Fredrik Burstedt conducts, and the soloist is the Norwegian cellist Amalie Stalheim.
Musical landscapes
If Anders Hillborg's cello concerto were a postcard, the recipient would surely be pleasantly surprised. The image on the front would be of the magical kind, where the landscape constantly changes shape. He lets the music, with the strings and the cellist – here with soloist Amalie Stalheim at the forefront – move between tranquility and emotional storms, ultimately settling into a longing solitude.
Many are already familiar with Anna-Lena Laurin's musical vistas. Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra has premiered several of her works, including The Painter for trumpet, jazz trio, and orchestra. Anna-Lena began her career as a jazz pianist and singer, and as a composer, she is renowned for her ability to blend the languages of jazz and classical music. This evening, we have the chance to reflect on the passage of time through her Times of Changes from 2018.
We begin the evening with a work by a third Swedish luminary, Andrea Tarrodi, born in 1981. In 2024, she was praised for her children's opera Vilse at the Royal Opera, and the year before, she was noted for Piteå Chamber Opera's short opera Sylvia about Sylvia Plath. The evening's piece, Fragments of Enlightenment from 2022, with its persistent striving towards light, can be interpreted as a depiction of humanity's need for escapism.
While we appreciate our Swedish vistas, it is, after all, nice to dream away sometimes. Speaking of which, the Norwegian landscapes aren't too shabby either, as you can see in the picture above.
Before the concert, the Estetiska programmet Musik will perform acoustic music in the Southern Foyer.
