Korngold and Tchaikovsky will feature in the season's third classical concert with the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra. We will warmly welcome back the acclaimed violinist Ellinor d’Melon, with the evening conducted by Eugene Tzigane.
Violinist Ellinor d’Melon, residing in Spain but originally from Jamaica with Cuban heritage, claims she was quite lazy as a child, resulting in her learning to play the violin before she could walk. Despite her young age, she has already worked with conductors like Zubin Mehta and Jaime Martín and has performed in concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
d’Melon last graced Sara Kulturhus in August 2023, performing Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto to resounding applause. Soon, we will hear her play for us again, this time Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.
Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony
The concert continues with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's (1840–1893) lesser-known second symphony. Dubbed "The Little Russian," the symphony incorporates three folk songs he heard in Kaminka, a village east of Kharkiv, where he stayed with his sister. Tchaikovsky recounted that the family's elderly servant, Peter Gerasimovitch, sang the folk song "The Crane" to him while he worked on the piece.
We begin with the short piece "Solus" by Andrea Tarrodi (born 1981), a dramatic commentary on the isolation and loneliness of the COVID-19 pandemic. When she created the piece for the British concert "Last Night of the Proms" in 2020, it was the first time the BBC commissioned a Swedish female composer for this prestigious task.
The evening's conductor is Eugene Tzigane, born in Japan in 1981 and principal conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland. Eugene studied in Stockholm and at the prestigious Juilliard School, the same institution where Philip Glass began his professional journey.
