Skellefteå: one of The World's Greatest Places 2022

TIME has named Skellefteå as one of The World's 50 Greatest Places 2022. But how did Skellefteå end up on that list, and to top it all off, the only Swedish destination on there?

Well, they asked their wide international network of correspondents which places in the world offer new and exciting experiences. Skellefteå qualified with the summary "nordic warmth".

They mention the heat in the form of the wood in Sara Kulturhus and The Wood Hotel, Bryggargatan's Michelin-class food experiences, but also the literal heat that melts the snow from the sidewalks in the center during the winter. They also pay tribute to our focus on sustainability with, among other things, electric buses and Northvolt, and the opportunity to live modernly in close proximity to nature.

Correspondent Brad Japhe took part in a press trip organized by Visit Skellefteå together with Swedish Lapland and Visit Sweden in January 2022. During the 24 hours in Skellefteå, the participants got to experience excellent hotels, food and wine experiences, and world-class hospitality. But they also got to experience the Skellefteå that has already been described by The Guardian and other world press. A Skellefteå that is the center of the green transition in Europe. Something which in turn is the result of long-term and hard work by many involved.

In the spring of 2022, Brad Japhe nominated Skellefteå for TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Places 2022 and in July 2022, Skellefteå, as the third Swedish destination ever, was named one of the world's 50 best places.
