Pike fishing in Svansele

We are in the small village Svansele, located on the northern bank of the Skellefteå river, 50 minutes drive from the coast and the river outlet. Here is a widespread wilderness with deep boreal coniferous forests and many beautiful lakes and streams. There is a lack of crowds, noise, and everyday demands. Svansele is the definition of calm.

Kayaking in Kåge bay

This route has not yet been determined, but we paddle out of the harbor, a bit upstream in the Kåge River that meets the sea in a delicious delta, before we turn out into the sea again and head towards Bastuholmen. I ask Emil to tell me a little about the bay. After all, it is his home ground.

Family getaway to White Mountain Lodge

A cozy getaway. A quiet tranquil retreat. That's what this place is. A break from the everyday noise. The small village of Kalvträsk, located in the southwestern part of Skellefteå municipality, is like another world, and the Youngman family and the Eriksson-Havh family have longed for that world for several weeks.

Sleep in the old church town

She unlocked our little faluröda church cottage. Inside, time stood still; everything was so beautiful. In the window that stood open fluttered a sheer curtain. My shoulders immediately lowered, my heart rate went down. Here we could just.. be.

When you walk through the old church town full of cottages, you can almost see the community they create, the hope of the countryside and our beautiful north.

Experience the northern lights

The northern lights are best experienced in the darkest possible environment. The coast is a good place, for example Bjuröklubb and Kågnäsudden. Other good places are Kalvträsk, the tower at the summit of Vitberget or the wilderness camp in Svansele.

How to master winter

One of the perks of living in the northern parts of Sweden is that we get to have a real winter. A winter with snow, ice, and the cold. Now, maybe you ask yourself, ”why does anyone want to be cold?” but let me tell you a little secret. The winters here in Swedish Lapland can be amazing, if you know how to master them.

Experience dog sledding

If this is the first time you've met a bunch of enthusiastic huskies, it's no wonder you're a bit reserved. But there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Join the British couple Sabine and Pete when they meet some of Skellefteå's furry locals for the first time.

Ice baths during a lunch break

To undress only when the thermometer shows -15 degrees goes against all human reason and sense. But for John and Maia, who takes cold baths regularly, it is the given lunch activity.

Snowshoes below the full moon

The sky is pitch black, and we're about to walk into the, seemingly, pitch black woods. We have snow shoes on our feet, headlamps and strict orders not to light them (!). You see, we have another source of light right above our heads. A big bright full moon.
